Conventional anglers can use the same observational skills as fly anglers. The goal is to identify the dominant forage and match its size, depth, movement, and profile.
Inspect the Forage
Look near ramps, weeds, dock lights, and shallow cover for baitfish, insects, and young-of-year prey.
Match Size First
Downsizing is often more important than finding an exact color. Predators become selective when one forage size is abundant.
Copy the Movement
A perfect-looking lure moving unnaturally is less convincing than a simple bait presented at the correct speed.
Use Seasonal Clues
Spring insects, summer baitfish, fall shad, and winter bottom forage each create different feeding windows.
Bottom line
Observe before casting. A few minutes of study can replace an hour of random lure changes.
