Through years of fishing I’ve learned that out of certain bodies of water they make excellent table fare and out of others not so much. I would love to hear some of your experiences because I would like to hopefully gain some new fishing spots. I’ve established that they’re good eating out of Choke canyon and lake corpus christi!

Freshwater drum are found in most of the big lakes in Texas. Often the hot water lakes, like Squaw Creek, will have large numbers of them. Most are under 10 pounds, but they can grow to over 50 pounds. They are edible and I know of couple of anglers that say they are their favorite fish to eat. They make excellent cut bait. Looking at the Texas fishing record site is a great way to determine if a lake has drum. Good luck and let us know how you do.

They’re my favorite as well! At choke canyon it’s not uncommon to catch upwards of 50 or 60 of them a day with my pb being nearly 30lbs. Growing up we always called em gaspergou

They’re edible. Certainly better than a sandbass or striper but nothing on par with crappie, bass, and walleye

When it comes to the Gaspergou, and so many other freshwater fish, Preparation is Key. Too many people not familiar with a certain species are quick to cast a negative light on it & because they don`t know what to do with it will just call it trash, say it`s ugly or say it not a good fish to eat which couldn`t be farther from the the truth. The TRUTH, IMHO , dwells in the skill level of the person that`s doing the preparation. A little flavor enhancer goes a long way but For some folks salt ,pepper & cornmeal is all they know! You take that away from them and they are clueless.

Plus #1.
Side Note: My wife is from China and she knows how to prepare and cook a lot of different fish. I ate Buffalo and Carp for the first time this year and it was pretty good.

I have not eaten one in years , When I was a kid , any drum was cleaned and eaten. They are first cousins to redfish , but they get no respect. I have caught plenty on Lake Palestine , but never fish for them on purpose,

Probably because they look like they were beaten with an ugly stick

I guess they are more closely related to black drum, the original ” Big Uglies “

Mom would pressure cook carp to melt all the tiny bones. The meat then went into a salmon patty recipe.
Tastes like salmon patties.

I was fishing on Palestine with my grandfather back in the late ’90s, right around Jerry Kidd’s place. He had an old jar of catalpa worms he’d frozen and thawed a dozen times. He took one of those leathery old worms, hooked it on a treble hook, and casted and retrieved that thing like he was fishing a crankbait. I had just commented that there was no way he was going to catch anything fishing like that when he set the hook. A nice 5# goo was the taker. That was one of many lessons in keeping my mouth shut.
On another note: I catch gaspergou fishing the dam on Lavon when targeting spawning channel cats. I have a 3/16″ mesh cast net and catch redfin shiners at the boat ramp. Fished under a cork along the rock, the gaspergou hit like a train and fight hard!
